Landscape Photography Courses Wales

Teaching one to one courses since 2003

A little about me...

I Studied photography at art college back in the mid to late eighties as part of my art foundation course.  After leaving art college I went on to become a self employed freelance artist for a short while before becoming a Freelance Systems Analyst Programmer, the programming was as creative as the art. At the begging of 2000 I started to turn my back on the IT world and went back to my passion and hobby of photography.

I set up Builth Wells Photography in 2003, providing a range of services including courses, portraiture, commercial and event photography. I have developed my own technique and style over the years, although this style seems to have been copied by a few local photographers.

I became the official photographer for the RWAS back in 2003 (Royal Welsh Agricultural Society) Spring Festival (Then called the Smallholder and Garden Festival) and also becoming the official photographer of the main ring. An event that can see more than of 24,000 people attending over the 4 days. During the RWAS shows I also have a stand which my wife kindly looks after for me while I'm out doing my duties as the official photographer.

My philosophy is, if I can do it anybody can! This is what I teach, no jargon and in layman terms. Lead by example! What I really like to teach are the fundamentals of composition, manual camera control and filters.I have also photographed HRH Prince Charles and other celebrities during my time as a freelance photographer.

I exhibit from the Visitors Centre in Libanus, The Brecon Beacons. Here you'll find photographs from the surrounding area.

Chillout time...

My free time is spent occasionally scuba diving (mostly off the west Wales coast) with a lot of hill walking in Mid Wales and scrambling/bouldering in North Wales. This year we will have travelled over 500 miles on the mountains - all of which have given me an intimate relationship with the landscapes around me, which is reflected in my photographs.

Current Equipment

I have a Bronica ETRsi 645 Medium format camera with a 75mm PE lens. I'm currently waiting for Digibacks for the Bronica to drop in price and then I'll be back on the Medium Format. I currently use two Nikon cameras - a D850 and a D700 for back-up and students' use. The lenses that I use include 10-20mm Sigma (for the D850), 17-35mm Nikon f2.8 (D850/700), 105mm Nikkor Micro f2.8 (D850), Sigma 120-300mm OSM Sport f2.8 (D850/D700), 50mm f1.8 (D850), 28mm manual f2.8 Nikkor 20 year old lens with a Hoya Intensifier for star and Aurora Borealis Photography.
